*Don’t forget to share this with your friends… Retweet Now!
Tell me Bruce, what is the definition of Twitter Patted anyway?
This last weekend I ran across this word and asked myself the same thing. I was cruising around Twitter, getting engrossed in this discussion and that Tweet, when I found the word “Twitter Patted” and right away it caught my eye.
I’d not seen that word, but I was especially curious and resolute in finding out what it meant. It looked kind of cool and it had been used in such context that was along the lines of “suggestive”, if you know what I’m saying. So my curiosity was aroused and I began the search.
Well as I quickly came to find out, “Twitter Patted” is actually the modern Twitter form of the original word “Twitterpated” which is just one word, not two words as I had seen it over the weekend.
Twitterpated or Twitter Patted means for a person to be eagerly inquisitive, actively stimulated or basically smitten with someone or something. I was astonished to find out that it had become a popular term after Disney’s Bambi movie about the little deer that came out in 1942.
There’s a scene in Disney’s movie where Bambi and friends see some birds fly by very sporatic, clinging to each other in a wild like flight and they ask the Owl very innocently (and I quote) “Wellll, what’s the matter with them? Why are they acting that way?” The Owl then leans over, folds his wing to his face to secretly reply and says “Why……… Don’t you know? They’re… twitterpated.” …he continues “Yes, nearly everybody gets twitterpated in the springtime…”
This scene goes on to be Disney’s short account for the mating routines of wildlife in the woods. As the Owl explains (in so many words) that most all animals become Twitterpated in the spring. One minute their fine, the next minute they are brimming over with euphoria for another, and it just happens without any effort and they won’t be able to control it. It’s the Owl’s own insight for the feeling the animals get when they locate their soul-mate in the spring.
So with this information, I explored even more to see what others today think about it and found this definition that I really think captures the spirit and emotion of Twitterpated / Twitter Patted. Here is the direct quote from the Urban Dictionary:
“An enjoyable disorder characterized by feelings of excitement, anticipation, high hopes, recent memories of interludes, giddiness, and physical over-stimulation which occur simultaneously when experiencing a new love. These feelings takeover without warning (such as at a check-out line), with or without the partner present, and make it difficult to concentrate on anything but romance. They interfere with work and safe driving, but should be experienced at least once in every person’s lifetime”
As used in a sentence: “Amy is too twitterpated to even get her article written ever since she met Ben.”
So to say the least, it’s a fun word from the least expected of places and you might ask yourself why I’d write about it? It comes down to this, “What fun is wild success… If you don’t have anyone to share it with?”

WOW – I never even considered that there might be a connection between Thumper and Twitter
You’ve piqued my interest a bit and it is apparent that I am deficient in the social media world, so I will have to check it out sometime. Seriously though, you are quite the writer, my friend! And I agree – success, wild or mild, is better shared with one who makes your perfect world an even better place. That does, however, beg the question: Is it better to have loved and lost – or never to have lost…
p.s. One point of contention – although the Owl was on the right track, the Urban Dictionary seems to have an incomplete definition. It should be noted that such euphoria, although readily associated with the passing infatuation of a “new love”, can easily be transferred into the lifelong experience of those who believe in, recognize and accept the unconditional love of another – they are the lucky few… Now there’s a fairy tale for ya!
